The Haunting Thoughts

Every morning when I wake up feeling bleak

And I'm nervous that the feeling might never leave

Like I'm circling a drain, I know I ain't

Every time I see something on the street

Like some drugged-out woman who ain't even twenty

Or some guy passed out, OD'd

I know it ain't me, and I just keep walking

And every night's the same, I wake up at 3:00 a.m.

The car I'm in is in the river, sinking

And I think of all the things I've done and the people that got me undone

About the chances I blew and the punches I threw

And it don't go away until I fall asleep

Just before I have to get up anyway

Every time I hear my neighbors yell

Or hear the news declare a million and one tragedies

I feel I can't breathe

And every wreck I see, or near miss that nearly

I try to block out and think about beauty

I try to remember that the haunting thoughts

Are just thoughts that are haunting me
