Kitchen Floor

It's faded by the back door, full of scratches and a couple dents

The way it creaks, there weren't no sneaking out or sneaking in

And I learned that the hard way coming home from my first date

Dad was waiting at the counter worried sick 'cause I was late

Grandma dropped that old cast iron teaching me to cook

And you can see the burn mark there if you know where to look

There's a scuff right by the wall from fighting over some dumb guy

And Mama left it there to prove the point she's always right

These hardwoods have seen hard times

Potlucks and birthdays

Where Mama wiped my tears away and I always had a shoulder

Muddy boots by the back door

That Granddad don't wear no more

Been a whole lotta life lived on this kitchen floor

Been a long time since we wore the shine right off of that solid maple

But I wouldn't trade a memory made saying grace around that table

There's years of smiles and stories safe and sound in that wood grain

And if I had a million dollars, hell, I'd keep 'em just the same
