Lyrics

Well the east wind’s been blowing now for what feels like an age
Covering over our hopes and dreams with coldness, confusion and rage
There’s snow and ice at the crossroads we can’t see which road to take
All our profiles are compromised and all our news is fake
And we’re now ruled by madmen a new species of sub-human beings
Who proliferate their message of hate while we stare blankly into our screens
And the corridors of power are patrolled by the dogs of war
Soon all of these crooks will be burning the books that’s what algorithms are for
The bats are in the belfry and they’re running the show
All the lights are on but there’s nobody home

And we think we’re so god damn clever yet there’s so much we don’t understand
We buy chemicals to make us feel better cause everything natural is banned
And the wind and the waves and the sunshine yet still all the power plants run
Cause that’s what keeps us in business there’s no profit in the light of the sun
And we spend fortunes that never existed on guns and machines that will fight
If only we paid doctors and teachers instead we might learn that it just isn’t right
So here we are at a second to midnight, dear friends, to the breach once more
We’ll stand on the beach down by the west pier singing ‘O what a lovely war!’
The bats are in the belfry and they’re running the show
All the lights are on but there is nobody home

And we say that the planet’s in danger and we’re pushing the world to the wire
But Mother Nature will go on long after we’re gone it’s only human life that’ll expire
And when there’s no more air on this old earth when we start the migration to Mars
And those with no worth will be abandoned at birth at the passport control to the stars
And one day we’ll look back at the planet just like the first astronauts did
Full of wonder and awe and panic at the shambles we made of it
So here comes the age of extinction, of dust and fire and bone
The earth will just be a landfill and there’ll be nobody home
