Oath of Allegiance

To meet the king to share my story with him,

Determine my value by all my high facts

When his eyes settled on me,

When I heard the sound of his voice,

I was overwhelmed by a sense of confidence and excitement

I never imagined a king could be so welcoming,

As if he had waited for us to come for years

Oh the lightness of his presence!

I felt like I belonged

What a disenchantment when he rejected my services!

How is it possible that my experience of combat

Or my achievements were not enough to get me enrolled?

Can we win a war by casting merit aside in the interest of values?

His confidence was indicative of inestimable strength or mad blindness!

I went in convinced I would achieve an important milestone today,

I would come out humiliated, disenchanted and disheartened

Unexpected and unforeseen!

I came to write the tale of my name,

But I discover that it has already made a mark on glorious epics

It is so easy to forget the facts and wisdom of the elders

I take up the writing of the tale from where my forefather left it

To meet the king, who lets me know my tale

My value is set before any high fact is achieved
