You Am I are Australian alternative-rock royalty. Formed in 1989 by vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Tim Rogers, the group have spent more than 30 years bashing out grungy power-pop and indie-rock gems. (Call them Australia’s answer to Guided By Voices.) You Am I didn't take long to find success: After debuting in 1993 with Sound As Ever—a noisy, dynamic album produced by Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo—their commercial fortunes peaked with a trio of Australian No. 1 LPs: Hi Fi Way, Hourly, Daily, and You Am I’s #4 Record. The band continued to nudge their sound forward, dabbling in raucous alt-country and swaggering rock ’n’ roll, but never lost sight of their melodic, catchy sweet spot. Ever consistent, they released The Lives of Others in 2021—and it’s as energetic and engaging as any of their early albums.
Members of You Am I include, or have included, Tim Rogers, Andy Kent, Russell Hopkinson and more.
