With all of her projects, visual artist, author, and singer/songwriter Jenny Hval brings a questioning, passionate, and insightful perspective to art, feminism, and sexuality. In much the same way that she contrasts her delicate vocals and candid statements, her mercurial combinations of folk, jazz, spoken word, and electronic music are equally unconventional and approachable. On albums such as 2012's Innocence Is Kinky, Hval paired dreamlike atmospheres with a resolutely independent viewpoint. Later, she touched on synth pop, metal, and horror soundtracks on 2017's Blood Bitch, while 2022's Classic Objects echoed her more direct songwriting with '80s pop influences and 2025's Iris Silver Mist showcased the immersive sensuality of her music. Hval is also an avid collaborator, and 2014's Meshes of Voice with Susanna Wallumrød and her work with Lost Girls are just as vital to her body of work as her solo albums.
