About Lea Maria Fries
Artist Biography
Lea Maria Fries is a Swiss singer, songwriter, and bandleader whose original music combines jazz, indie rock, electronic pop, R&B, and improvisation in a smoky, expressive, often understated alto. Originally trained as a pianist, she shifted to jazz vocal studies at age 14. At university, her instructors included Susanne Abbuehl and Lauren Newton. She is a member of German electro-pop group 22° Halo, her pianist Gauthier Toux's trio Dutronc & Dutronc, Macha Gharibian's trio, and Empire of Sound. Fries recorded her debut album, Light at an Angle, in 2019, but didn't release it until April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following European tours, she re-entered the studio with her quartet and a small guest list that included jazz accordionist and vocalist Vincent Peirani. She emerged with CLEO, her sophomore album, in April 2025.
