Adrian “Biggy” Entwistle’s humorous Afrikaans raps glide over EDM production—a recipe that, in his hands, often leads to catchy songs with rhymes simple enough to recite while getting down on the dance floor. “Dames,” the Port Elizabeth-born artist’s first viral single released in 2019, was an instance of that formula at work. Though criticized for objectifying women amid a high gender-based violence rate in South Africa, “Dames” generated memes from Afrikaans speakers whose amusement stemmed from the catchy line “Dames sê my wat jou naam is, my name is Adriaanes” (“Ladies, tell me your name, my name is Adriaanus”) repeated in the chorus. While Biggy may have appeared as just a lucky neighborhood oke to some fans after “Dames,” his second album, 2021’s Jong Grotes, proved that his funny lyrics deserved the respect of peers.
