BhadBoi OML
Bhad Boi (Deluxe)
Album · Afrobeats · 2025
Building on a promising debut in 2023, several singles, and a 2025 EP, BhadBoi OML’s Bhad Boi (Deluxe) delivers 10 additional songs that flesh out the project into a cohesive whole. While his debut explored lover’s rock, house, and trap, here, OML dives into Yoruba root music traditions like fújì and jùjú infused with contemporary Afropop and R&B. The midtempo “River,” featuring L.A.X, channels “palm wine music” through 3-2 claves and steady drums, while “Pawo” leans into a bass-driven interplay dominated by log drums. “Alimanjiri” pairs ceaseless percussion—recalling makeshift madrasa instruments—with log drums and treated vocals, creating a song that weaves a unique mix of Islamic-influenced music from northern to southern Nigeria.
The most overt tribute to BhadBoi’s fújì heritage, “Wasiu Ayinde,” is named after Ayinde Barrister, a fújì legend. OML also draws from the wider pool of Nigerian pop, deploying familiar and nostalgic lyrical and melodic riffs identifiable to long-term Afrobeat fans. Treated falsetto wails, sun-dappled pianos, and the artist’s singing voice are deployed to good effect on “Maradona,” switching from head to chest voice which deepens its emotive range, even for non-Yoruba-speaking listeners.
Guest features add good grist to the mill. OML’s swagger-fueled verse on “Pawo” is complemented by Kash’s sleek nod to Olu Maintain’s hit “Catch Cold.” L.A.X’s engaged verse on “River” blends pidgin, English, and patois which, combined with BhadBoi’s mix of English, Yoruba, and Arabic phrases, heightens the gumbo of flavors that make up an album marked by growth, introspection, heritage, and experimentation.
