Lyrics

It aint workin
It aint workin
What we waitin for my people
Got us thinkin
Got us thinkin
This is necessary evil
What an awful theory
Cops don't make us safer clearly
We got centuries to prove it
How much longer will we do this
All this reformation
Still they treat us like a curse
Call the police when there's danger
They roll up and make it worse
I got jumped and robbed
Then a witness called the cops
Police show up and they put me
In the back seat of the car
Huh
My homegirl got beat up but she
Spent the night in jail
Just for defendin herself
Her abuser sleepin well
Other homegirl took a deal
Went to prison for a year
Even though she didn't do it
She just couldn't take the risk
Of an Orange County jury tryna
Steal a decade of her life
Took a bargain
Sickly husband
Died while she was locked inside
Tell me why we still convinced
We need cops and jails at all
Cause more problems than they solve
And contribute to the harm
It aint workin
It aint workin
What we waitin for my people
Got us thinkin
Got us thinkin
This is necessary evil
What an awful theory
Cops don't make us safer clearly
We got centuries to prove it
How much longer will we do this
All this reformation
Still they treat us like a curse
Call the police when there's danger
They roll up and make it worse
911 is over please
Don't call that anymore
Most the time they show up
And the damage is already done
Danger is already gone
Still they roll up blazing guns
Superhero attitude
Traumatizing everyone
Treating victims like the perpetrator
Sexually assaulted then you're
Heartlessly interrogated
The mentally unstable
Gettin killed for being sick
How you gon diffuse the tension
Wit a fully loaded clip?
WE HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO LIVE
Can't protect or serve us
Full of fear and prejudice
Everything look like a weapon
When your melanin is rich
It aint workin
It aint workin
What we waitin for my people
Got us thinkin
Got us thinkin
This is necessary evil
What an awful theory
Cops don't make us safer clearly
We got centuries to prove it
How much longer will we do this
All this reformation
Still they treat us like a curse
Call the police when there's danger
They roll up and make it worse
It aint workin
It aint workin
What we waitin for my people
It aint workin
It aint workin
What we waitin for
It's no coincidence that the people most
In favor of police and prisons
Are the most privileged among us
If the mission was truly protection and service
The focus would be on the well-being
Of those who need protection and services the most
An organization of social good empowering
Marginalized and vulnerable populations
Instead America's prisons are brimming with
People stricken by poverty oppression disability
Chronic illness unemployment homelessness
And mental health conditions
Our punishment rooted trigger happy
Vengeance system is adored by those
With the greatest amount of power
Generously funding and
Violently defending the status quo
When you exist at the apex of the pyramid
The last thing you want is a reordering of society
Redistribution of ill-gotten gain
When you make money millions from
Privately owned prisons
The last thing you want is fewer inmates
The last thing you need is change
And by change I don't mean
More diversity among police
Judges wardens or commander in chiefs
Black citizens becoming agents
Of White supremacy is a far cry from progress
My people it's time to stop
feeding the hand that bites us
I pray we all lose faith in this
God-forsaken justice system
To uphold the law and order of this Nation
Is to uphold your own oppression
The safest neighborhoods
Have the least police presence
The ghetto don't need more police to protect it
The ghetto was created by the authorities
Step across the red lining and they'll
Crack your Black cranium right back into place
A mind is a terrible thing to waste
A dream is a dangerous thing to chase
