Safe Haven

I remember lying flat on my back

On the stairs of the corridor

I could smell the cigarettes

And the white wine

From right underneath the door

I was listening to my dad who

Played the piano

I was listening to my parents’ friends who

Missed all the rhythm

I was at the end of preschool

I was a midnight spy

I stayed up till the sun rose

And always wondering why

They stumbled and fell

I remember the fights

At the end after everybody left

I can vividly recall all the things said

Through the bars of the staircase

I was listening to my mom who

Spoke to my father

Let’s just clean things up and leave for bed

Before the boys wake up

After all this time I finally see

The shoreless sea of tranquility

And I’ll take it, yeah, I’ll take it

The wasted hours awake in bed

A fortress was what we once had

A safe and steady haven

And though I think from time to time

The moments I had lost my mind
