The Flag
When you're handed the Flag that's been folded so well
Every crease, ever turn, every final detail
They've fired the guns and you're on the front row
When you're handed the flag for the Veteran that fell
I wasn't prepared for losing my Dad
He was bigger than life, above good and bad
His deep and strong voice and the laughter he shared
Everyone that he met knew how much he cared
But the Colonel's command could make you feel scared
All the rules of performance kept me keenly aware
But the fun that we had when he took off his boots
He'd be howling at the moon, digging deep in his roots
When you're handed the Flag that's been folded so well
Every crease, every turn and every final detail
And they've fired the gun, you're on the front row
They're down on one knee, looking deep in your soul
He loved the ladies and he loved to drink
Suffered no fools and always made me think
His brilliant remarks and his sarcastic grin
Made it easy to take, like his tonic & gin
He flew 40,000 hours in that great big blue sky
He said he should have paid them for all the fun in his life
Now if I ever remarry, whether good thing or bad
I guarantee he'll have to be as great as my Dad
When you're handed the Flag that's been folded so well
Every crease, every turn and every final detail
Duty, Honor, Country and three rifle shells
And you're handed the flag for the Veteran that fell
What did I never tell him? I guess, what the hell
How much I respect all the Veteran's that fell
Can you hear my heart crying for my Veteran that fell
I was handed the Flag at the Colonel's farewell
