Lyrics
My Grandpaw’s Hero, was born in 1919
In backwoods Calhoun County Alabama
His mama died giving birth
He was left without a home
Another family took him in
Raised him as their own
Till the night their house burnt down in flames
And he learned his real last name
One day when I meet him over on the other side
I’ll play a game of checkers, then sing a song or two
Most of all, I just wanna tell him
He’s my hero too
Had to teach himself how to be a man, Quit school to work with his bare hands
Wasn’t nobody better with a shotgun
Then one day he heard the news
They needed help in World War Two
So he signed up to fight
Went overseas to risk his life
And when he came back home
Everything he had was gone
One day when I meet him over on the other side
I’ll play a game of checkers, then sing a song or two
Most of all, I just wanna tell him
He had a million reasons to be angry
I guess he just wasn’t the bitter kind
And as he aged the sickness came and slowly took his mind
But he could still sing “God Is Love”
Cause that’s what he felt inside
After 83 years he met his Momma the day he died
She finally got to hold him and say “Son I sure love you”
He’s my Great Granddaddy that I never knew
He’s my hero too
