Magnolia Holler

Out in the hills of Eastern Kentucky

Was a land that I briefly once knew

I lived on that dirt starting at birth

Until I realized every hard truth

Left there alone in search of a home

A place without smoke in the air

Was easy to do and then saw into

Of how my folks they live in despair

Granny left school at the age of 13

For work she didn't sign up for

Papaw chain smoked and gave himself heatstroke

As he poured concrete for mansion floors

They married young and one kid that'd come

From that union I called him my dad

At least for a few years things were alright

Besides nothing more is left to be had

In Magnolia Holler the sun doesn't shine

Magnolia Holler ain't no friend of mine

She's plenty in sorrow and plenty in pain at the same time

Magnolia Holler's got nothing to show

She sneaks up on you like a one lane back road

Magnolia Holler stayed on the ground so I could fly

Summers were blazing and winters were cold

But coats from the Goodwill proved sweet

Church was our second home every Sunday

For they had good AC and heat

Rations were rough but God we were tough

So we'd EBT it or starve

We'd eat out at night under the moonlight

As we made shapes from different stars

One day I'll go back and might look around

At the rubble of what it once was

It's worse than when I told it goodbye

Now's had years of more chaos and drugs

Lord set them free for they don't mean

No harm to your skies or your land

My days there were hard but every yard

Gave me a piece of who I now am
