Got hit with something cold

The headline of another day gone bleak

There was trash making spirals in the air

And a little black dog running up the street

Some cops flew by as sirens wailed

And I turned the radio higher

Staring at those thin yellow lines

That trailed behind with a blue desire

Was driving through Richmond

Where an old boyfriend moved a couple years ago

After his best friend shot himself in the head

At Thanksgiving dinner, the one I didn't go

That was tragic and sad

And earlier that day, I pissed him off

Left him hanging for the last time

I was thinking of hitting him up to ask how he was doing, and to apologize

When I got back home to New York

My favorite place in the whole wide world

I saw a couple kids laughing on the corner

Next to a woman sleeping right there on the floor

There was a yellow butterfly in the sky

And I thought to myself, that just doesn't happen

Very often, so I tried to take it in

But it floated underground into that piss-stained coffin

Where some folks emerged in a hurry

On their phones, trying to get to work or something

And I totally forgot about that butterfly

And moved on with my life, as if it were nothing

Just a flash of color, like everything else

Falling into place in a timeline

Under nukes, and trees, and changing skylines
