You were there in my body, gone just as quickly

All that’s left now are my body

and I turned upside down

Expectations of a lifetime and a life not found

I ate three cakes on my birthday with pleasure

Swallowed down years of

over sweetened promise and pressure

And a lifetime of fighting to be more than a vessel

And despite knowing it wasn’t meant to be

It would have been so difficult anyway

My heart and insides still bleed

But I equally feel totally freed

Now to my freedom and loss I honour

To recognise one does not negate the other

Pain and joy can be held in one house

Without shame
