Unwinding

There used to be an understanding

If you work hard you get to live like a human being

The middle used to be the center

And the center had a voice

But now there’s been a great unwinding

An undermining and it’s tearing us away

It’s all a game of win or lose

That’s been decided before we even start to play

You think that there’s a chance that life

Might mean something to someone at least

You’re living off the scraps that fall and

There aren’t many and less each passing day

What you were you are no longer do you belong here

Or are you just in the way?

You’re taking all the meds you can just to stay on your feet

And earn your worthless pay/

You used to have a real life a real job a real place to stay

Then you woke one day to find that who you were had finally gone away
