It must be half past two

I’m fast asleep and right on cue

The baby in the next room’s cryin’ out

We both agreed we wanted kids

But can’t agree whose turn it is

To get that little boy to settle down

So I get up and try to do my best

I hold him close and rock him on my chest

I may be tired but it’s ok to miss a little bit of sleep

It’s Sunday afternoon

The football game is starting soon

I’m tired from working late last night again

But someone’s feeling bored

He reaches out a plastic sword

And says “Dad, can we be ninjas, let’s pretend”

So I get up and try to do my best

Fighting bad guys when I should be getting rest

I may be tired but it’s ok to miss a little bit of sleep

No matter what I do, he just can’t stay

I close my eyes and lose another day

It’s hard to think that one day time’s gonna take my kids away

It’s almost one a.m.

I sneak inside his room again

To see him while he’s sleeping through the night

I take his little hand in mine

I wish that I could pause the time

And hold him here forever as a child

When he wakes up I’ll try to do my best

To make the most of time that I have left
