Catching Flies: Winter Warmers
Playlist - 30 Songs
“I used to dread winter,” Catching Flies—aka London musician, DJ, and producer George King—tells Apple Music. “But in recent years, I have tried to embrace it.” What’s helped, he adds, is seeing winter as “a necessary part of nature’s cycle, a time of acceptance and collectively bracing ourselves for the dark nights and cold days ahead. Life becomes simpler, quieter and more peaceful.” And this is the music that represents the season best for the producer, whose picks includes tracks by Four Tet, Mazzy Star, Bonobo, Romare, Jon Hopkins and Ólafur Arnalds, and, of course, Catching Flies. “The common thread seems to be icy synths, sparse atmospheres, and glistening melodies,” he says of his selection. But this playlist also houses gentle, warming moments that feel designed to soundtrack—and bring comfort to—winter nights in, which is perhaps no coincidence when you consider what King was picturing as he put it together. “I imagined sitting in a log cabin in a forest and watching the snowfall out the window,” he says. “In reality, I will probably spend the majority of the winter in Tottenham, London, battling with an umbrella in heavy rain on the way to the local Sainsbury’s [supermarket]. But a man can dream.” Wherever he is, he’ll remember what he’s learnt most about winter rolling around each year: That, despite the darker nights and colder days, there’s so much pleasure to be had. “There are so many little moments to look forward to and to be grateful for,” he says. “Crisp, blue sky, sunny winter mornings. Ice skating with family. Snow delicately resting on the trees. The crackle and smell of log fires. Cups of tea.” Whatever winter brings you this year, let this two-hour-playlist be your soundtrack.
