Kelly Lee Owens: Winter Warmers
Playlist - 20 Songs
“Winter is an introspective time, and this collection of music has always held me through the darker moments,” Kelly Lee Owens tells Apple Music of her Winter Warmers playlist. “A reflective time, full of wisdom and heart and inner warmth.” The Welsh producer’s selection certainly meets the mood: Tracks here include Björk’s “Frosti,” Radiohead’s “III Wind,” and Bert Jansch’s “In the Bleak Mid Winter,” with many of these songs featuring sparse, icy electronics and piercing vocals that evoke the stillness of winter. Then there are the songs by artists Owens has always seen as intrinsically linked to the season. At the top of that list are Cocteau Twins—“I always associate Cocteau Twins with the magic of deep Celtic winters, the ethereal, which seems so much more accessible during the colder months,” she says—and Broadcast. “I mean the title of this track is called ‘Winter Now,’ but again, I have always associated this band with the deep subconscious dive that I feel winter evokes.”
But winter isn’t just about drawing inwards, it’s also about remembering the brighter days that are ahead, and for Owens, there’s one song that does that best: Massive Attack’s “What Your Soul Sings” featuring Sinéad O’Connor. “The message of this track is so hopeful, it’s a lot of light during the darker months,” says Owens. As for where she’d recommend you listen to this playlist? “Probably on a winter morning walk, or when you’re at home in the early eve and it’s already dark.”
