Georgia Stanway: The-Warm Up
Playlist - 20 Songs
“Music is one of the most important things for me, both on a game day and in everyday life,” England midfielder Georgia Stanway tells Apple Music. “It’s the most satisfying feeling putting headphones on and escaping everything that’s around. It allows me to stay relaxed, get hyped when needed—but not too hyped—and really feel the music as if I’m singing it!” The importance of music as a motivator and relaxer for Stanway is underlined by the fact that it’s always with her on the day of a match. “I listen alone in the car as I drive to a game—on full blast, of course!” she says “And then [on] my AirPods Max headphones for the bus journeys. When I arrive at the stadium, I will always listen to the changing room music, always adding my requests. I like a lot of genre types. Pre-game, I can jump between R&B, pop, or more slow love music. Recently, I’ve been enjoying German music, since I’ve been here for a few years now [Stanway joined Bayern Munich in 2022]. Just depends how I’m feeling. The only thing that matters is that I can sing along!” That’s illustrated by the satisfying diversity of Stanway’s playlist, which draws on hip-hop from the US, Canada, and Germany, indie rock from Australia, dance from Sweden, and UK pop past and present—among many other sounds. Read on as she talks us through some of the key tracks in her selection. The Temper Trap, “Sweet Disposition” “No matter how long you go without listening to this song, you won’t ever forget the words. Even if you just make the sounds! It brings me such good summer memories, enjoying the sun with my friends. Lighthearted with a meaning of never giving up.” Mac Miller, “Funny Papers” “I’m a huge Mac Miller fan—the Balloonerism album is absolutely genius. One of the first songs I remember singing as a youngster was ‘Knock Knock,’ and I’ve always had, and will have, ‘Nikes on My Feet’!” The Vamps, “Can We Dance” “So I introduced this song into the [Bayern Munich] changing rooms this year, after talking about boy bands and wanting some sing-alongs. We tried JLS, OneRepublic, The Wanted, but The Vamps came out on top. This is now the most played just before we go out for warm-up and we’ve got players from 15 nationalities belting this out—even though we haven’t worked out the order of ‘should I stay?’ or ‘should I go?’!”
