No other song is as emblematic of the rock kapak ethos as “Isabella”, Search’s 1989 single that bookended the genre’s decade and made it immortal. Its legendary guitar solo is goosebumps-inducing, the lovelorn lyrics are earnestly schmaltzy, and singer Amy’s vocals reach a high that still haunts karaokes across the land. It spurred the rise of Search, one of few bands of the 1980s that remains evergreen. While their lineup varies till today—even frontman Amy is noncommittal—they’ve never disbanded and can still fill capacity concerts. Ask any Fenomena fan: rock kapak never dies.
