Emerging during the rock boom of the early 2000s, Jakarta-based Ungu experienced a slow and steady ascent to superstardom. Thanks to a flow of mainstream hits, the five-piece officially became top-tier rockers with 2005’s Melayang, which includes the megahit “Demi Waktu”, a bombastic, sweeping track that marks a deliberate move from the group’s rockier sound and came to define their later releases. The band are also known for breaking new sonic ground: their 2009 song “Hampa Hatiku” is an example—with crunchy guitars and rhythmic dangdut inflections.
Members of Ungu include, or have included, Pasha and Enda UNGU.
