Exploring relatable themes of escape, existentialism, and wanderlust, internet rapper-producer Tohji has found a home within the hearts of angsty Japanese youth.
• Tohji stepped onto the Japanese rap scene via SoundCloud with his 2017 single “I’m a Godzilla Duh,” followed by his self-produced EP 1996.
• Hailing from Yokohama, a commercial suburb on the outskirts of Tokyo, Tohji makes music inspired by his hometown’s shopping centers, which serve as hubs for global cultural exchange.
• In 2018, Tohji and Japanese emo-rapper gummyboy formed Mall Boyz, an homage to Japanese mall culture. The widespread success of their prefatory Mall Tape made Tohji a topic of national interest.
• The following year, Tohji put forth his debut mixtape, Angel, which was so well-received by his rapidly growing fan base that every stop of his six-city tour across Japan was sold out.
• Tohji directed the video for his self-produced 2020 single "Orea," pairing dream-like visuals with his computerized soundscapes.
