One of the cornerstone acts of the U.K. retro-soul scene, the New Mastersounds play taut, old-school funk, vintage R&B, and groove jazz with a contemporary energy and a confident swing that has earned them positive press and led to collaborations with major acts in Britain and the United States. The bulk of their recordings are instrumentals, though they've cut sessions with noted vocalists, including Corinne Bailey Rae on 2003's Be Yourself and Lamar Williams, Jr. on 2019's Shake It, and though the band works well in the studio, they've also documented the strength of their interaction with their audience on 2016's The Nashville Session. After two years sidelined by outside circumstances, the New Mastersounds returned with 2022's The Deplar Effect, recorded as the band gathered in Iceland.
