Bubble Puppy were one of the great Texas bands of the psychedelic era, but although they had a bona fide hit with their song “Hot Smoke and Sassafras,” they didn’t achieve the lasting renown of contemporaries like their International Artists labelmates The 13th Floor Elevators. Formed in 1966, the band released its debut album, A GATHERING OF PROMISES, in ’69, reaching number 14 with the aforementioned single. But after splitting from their label, they renamed themselves Demian and made an album for Dunhill in ’71 before disbanding altogether. They reunited in 1984, which resulted in a new release, WHEELS GO ROUND.
