b. Charles Allen Terrell, 15 March 1961, Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Raised mainly in the small town of Albertville, Terrell played guitar and sang from childhood. Some of his singing was in church, but, determined upon a career as a professional musician, he also sang and played guitar in talent shows, gradually drawing attention. After leaving high school, Terrell attended Belmont University, Nashville, attracted by the music program. With a fellow student named Hawk (Richard Smith) he formed Innuendo, a guitar-conga pairing that eventually expanded into the band, Rococo, but with only limited success. In 1988, Terrell and Hawk, now in Los Angeles, formed another band, which led to Terrell being signed to I.R.S. Records. After one album (On The Wings Of Dirty Angels), the band dissolved and Terrell scuffled for the next few years before landing a new contract, this time with PointBlank Records. He released two impressive albums for PointBlank in the mid-90s, enjoying rather more success and undertaking a number of overseas tours. His blend of contemporary blues and R&B had a deceptive smoothness beneath which lay a raw edge. Composing much of the material in his repertoire, some of his songs uncompromisingly explore the seamier aspects of modern life. Terrell’s plans for a new album, to have been named Taking The Jesus Pill, came to nothing when the record company decided that they did not care for the concept. Instead, Terrell took to the road in the late 90s with a stage show that elaborated upon the concept. His 1999 solo release 3 Links In A Broken Chain was composed and recorded as a tribute to his former partner, Hawk, who died of a drugs overdose in July 1998. Terrell’s Taking The Jesus Pill show was revived in 2004 and led directly to his being invited to work on the design of video shows being prepared by Polly Parsons to celebrate the life and work of her father, Gram Parsons. In May 2005, Terrell and Polly Parsons were married. Among sidemen Terrell has had in his accompanying band, the Vibe Assassins, are organists Tommy Ayre and John Nau, guitarist Rich Meijer (Meyer), bass player J. Swanson and drummer Jim Doyle.
