The growing discography of Nathi, born in 1982 in Umtata, South Africa, is full of emotive reflections upon romance. Born into a musical family, Nathi became inspired to pursue his career in part through watching Ezodumo, the national broadcaster SABC 1’s Indigenous music show, and emulating what he saw and heard. His 2015 breakout single, “Nomvula,” was a breezy Afrosoul ballad about unrequited love. His multi-platinum certified debut album Buyelekhaya, on which the single appears, was a key moment in 2010s South African popular music and helped cement Nathi’s place within a long lineage of Afro-pop stars hailing from the Eastern Cape.
