Spanish rock band Jarabe de Palo was formed by Pau Donés, who worked at an ad agency before pursuing music full time.
∙ After appearing in a TV commercial, the band’s sinewy blues-rocker “La Flaca” became their breakthrough hit, winning Song of the Year at the 1997 Premios Ondas awards.
∙ Jarabe de Palo’s debut LP, 1996’s La Flaca, topped the Spanish charts and was certified six-times Platinum.
∙ Donés wrote “Cambia la Piel,” the final track on Ricky Martin’s blockbuster 2000 album, Sound Loaded.
∙ Over the years, the band has collaborated with such popular musicians as Alejandro Sanz, Celia Cruz, Ximena Sariñana, and The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde.
∙ Jarabe de Palo was nominated for a Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album Grammy Award for 2007’s Adelantando.
∙ 2014’s Somos was the first record nominated in two major Latin Grammy categories—Album of the Year and Best Pop/Rock Album—in the same year.
