Edison Machado was a self-taught Brazilian drummer and bandleader. Inventor of the samba o prato style (the samba beat on the cymbals) during the 1950s, he was a founding member of the bossa nova movement. A prolific session drummer, he worked on albums by Luis Bonfa, Os Bossa Três, and Sérgio Mendes & Bossa Rio in the '60s. He released Edison Machado É Samba Novo in 1964, then played sessions and concerts with Rio 65 Trio, Tania Maria, Edú Lôbo, and Maria Bethânia. After his Edison Machado Quartet released Obras and Obras 2 in 1970 and 1971, Machado emigrated to New York for 13 years and played with Victor Assis Brasil, Paulo Moura Hepteto, Stan Getz, and Chet Baker live and in the studio. He joined the ensemble Boa Nova and led them on the classic 1978 album Edison Machado & Boa Nova.
Edison Machado has also released music as a member of Bossa Tres.
