Pianist Dom Salvador is among the most influential artists in Brazilian music history. His incorporation of jazz and R&B into traditional samba created a new sound: funky samba. In 1964, he and drummer Dom Um Romao recorded The Copa Trio. In 1965 he led the albums Salvador Trio and Rio '65 Trio (the latter with super drummer Edison Machado). Dom Salvador E Abolição released Som, Sangue E Raça in 1971. He left Brazil for New York in 1973. He cut three albums as Romao's pianist including 1975's Spirit of the Times and 1976's Hotmosphere. In 1976 Salvador released My Family and served as music director for Harry Belafonte's 1977 European tour and on his Turn the World Around. Since 1980 his trio has played Brooklyn's River Cafe, worked sessions, and performed at jazz festivals. In 2025, his collaboration with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad was released as JID024.
