Australia-born singer and songwriter Betty Who built a dedicated following—known as the “Who Crew”—with her feel-good brand of ’80s-style dance pop. • Betty Who—real name Jessica Anne Newham—grew up in Sydney. She started playing the cello at age four and taught herself guitar and piano before delving into songwriting at age 14. • She moved to the US as a teenager to study at Michigan’s Interlochen Center for the Arts and later Boston’s Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she started making music with producer Peter Thomas. • Who’s self-released, Whitney Houston–inspired debut single, “Somebody Loves You,” arrived in 2012 and soundtracked a viral marriage proposal video the following year. She released the EP The Movement in 2013. • After Who signed with RCA Records, “Somebody Loves You” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. • The singer remained with RCA for two albums, 2014’s Take Me When You Go and 2017’s The Valley, before going independent for her third LP, 2019’s Betty. • During her RCA tenure, she topped Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart two more times—with “All of You” in 2015 and her cover of the 1996 Donna Lewis classic “I Love You Always Forever” in 2016. • Her 2018 remix of the Canadian production duo’s Widelife’s 2003 single “All Things (Just Keep Getting Better)”—off the soundtrack for the Bravo reality series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy—was used as the theme song for the second season of Netflix’s Queer Eye.
