About Ben Frost
Artist Biography
Fusing ambient drone with the crunch of noise and the blasted desolation of black metal, Ben Frost wrings exquisite pleasure out of extreme conditions. Born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1980, Frost grew up traveling the continent with his family, absorbing influences from the forbidding landscape. His sound arrived fully formed on his 2003 debut album, Steel Wound, which he recorded on treated guitar in the outback, folding in environmental field recordings from Room40 label head Lawrence English. Frost moved to Iceland in the mid-2000s; there, he became a member of the post-classical label collective Bedroom Community, releasing a series of increasingly intense, at times almost claustrophobic albums like 2006’s Theory of Machines, 2009's By the Throat, and 2014’s Aurora, which he largely wrote in the Democratic Republic of Congo while working alongside the documentarian and visual artist Richard Mosse. Since the 2010s, Frost has increasingly become known for his soundtrack work for films, games, and television series, including Julia Leigh’s Sleeping Beauty, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, and the Netflix series Dark, fleshing out those worlds with his moody, evocative brand of soundscaping.
