American multi-instrumentalist Aaron Dessner is best known as a songwriter and guitarist for indie rock group the National. His sound is characterized by subtlety mixed with grandiosity and warmth.
The National formed in the late '90s, releasing a self-titled album in 2001. They followed with 2003's Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, 2005's Alligator, and 2007's Boxer. The next two National albums, 2010's High Violet and 2013's Trouble Will Find Me, were recorded in Dessner's garage in Brooklyn. For their seventh album, 2017's Sleep Well Beast, the band were housed at Dessner's New York studio, Long Pond. Dessner and Justin Vernon set up 37d03d in 2018, through which they released the debut Big Red Machine album. Dessner began collaborating with Taylor Swift in 2020, co-writing and producing both Folklore and Evermore. A second Big Red Machine album dropped in 2021, called How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?
Aaron Dessner has also released music as a member of Red Bird Hollow, Complete Mountain Almanac, The National, and Big Red Machine.
