About Benjamin Carr

Born in England and a student of Arnold and Wesley, Benjamin became an American publisher, organist and composer. A prominent figure in the music of Philadelphia -- the country's capital at this time in his life -- Carr became the first established music publisher in the United States. Within the firm, Benjamin's brother, Thomas, was the first publisher of "The Star-spangled Banner"; Benjamin also published "Yankee Doodle," "Adeste Fideles," and the first American musical magazine, the "Musical Journal for the Piano Forte". Carr's compositions included the genres of hymns, psalms, anthems, songs and masses. ~ Keith Johnson
