At the Shenstone College Disco there's a girl from San Francisco

Says she knows Laurence Ferlinghetti and he's tall and he's sweet and he's lovely

And I want to believe her, but we've drunk way too much vodka And the last dance it is playing then she says d'you fancy staying

As we stumble onto the dance floor to Three Times a Lady by the Commodores

The disco ends there's muted applause lights come on as we head for the doors

Later on back in her room she puts on Astral Weeks

And she says thank god I remembered

Remembered to change the sheets and we fall asleep

Early the next morning I'm awakened without warning

By a cat who takes a shine to me it must be hungry

And the girl she slowly wakes up and says oh I feel a bit rough

There's cat food is in the pantry you seem a little more alive than me

So I feed the cat and make some tea her flatmate appears and says just ignore me

There's an early bird lecture at nine return to the bedroom in double quick time

When I get back my American girl is dressed and ready to go

You can see yourself out she says it was lovely to getting to know you

All that took place years ago but just the other day I saw her on Bromsgrove High Street she walked up to me and said hey

I never met Laurence Ferlinghetti I was born just down the road

And my American accent was a drama school experiment I just thought you should know

And after we spoke I laughed at the joke the one I'd carried around forever

And then she said if you fancy it we could hang out again together

She gave me her number I haven't yet called her it's still possible I guess

But I think I prefer the American girl in her poetic state of undress

And on the way home I felt strangely alone in my head at odds with the world

So I turned the feeling into a song its one you would never have heard
