When I Look Back

Barely knew the girl in and out of shadows

Under cap and blues, formed in jagged edges

Not the kind of girl boys would hide their sheets for

And kids would talk - “She’s” a he, a dyke, a freak

How long the days to be the only one

The bruises that stay any way you may run

When you’re old but your years are young

Barely knew a home, just a room for waiting

for the lock to turn. Lights out, walls grew closer still

When I look back, does she return my gaze

Can she forgive me, leaving her there that way

Though there’s still something of her that stays

You did your time so I could walk free

Thinking of you reminds me who to be

How life has taught us well
