I cover the waterfront

Watching the ships go by

I could see everyone's baby

But I couldn't see mine

I cover the waterfront

I could see them meeting their loved ones

Shaking hands and laughing and talking with their loved ones

But I couldn't see mine

I still cover the waterfront

A little girl walked over to me

Said, "Oh, Johnny, you've been sitting here so patiently

So alone, covering this waterfront"

I looked around and to her face

I said, "I'll be here 'til my baby comes down" when

And after a while all the ships left the land

And the little ones went on their way to their destination

I still sat there covering the waterfront

And after a while, I looked down the ocean

As far as I could see

I saw a ship in the fog heading this way

It must be my baby coming home to me

And and after a while the ship reached the land

And my baby stepped off board

Said Johnny we had trouble in the fog

And that's why my ship is so late coming home to you

But I still cover the waterfront
