A dedicated DIY streak runs through the work of Melbourne’s Press Club, a cathartic alt-rock quartet who have found success on their own terms. Guitarist Greg Rietwyk has handled production since the start, with the band members all recording live in the room together. Such directness definitely invigorated their 2017 debut single “Headwreck”—delivered with almost frantic momentum—and their 2018 breakout “Suburbia,” which saw vocalist Natalie Foster memorably vent about leaving her heart in the suburbs. Her anthemic instincts and powerful voice served her equally well on the same year’s cover of The Killers’ “When You Were Young,” recorded for triple j’s popular Like A Version series. The ragged edges of Foster’s intense vocals are especially hard-hitting on 2022’s “Endless Motion” and 2024’s dreamier “Wasted Days,” though still reserving crucial open space for the band’s robust hooks and tight-knit dynamics. These songs capture their well-honed attack as a live band, and Rietwyk’s studio Lunchroom still doubles as Press Club’s own personal street-level record label.
