“In the Heights means the world to me,” Anthony Ramos tells Apple Music about starring in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical that helped launch his career. “This musical really gave me hope that I could be on Broadway. I'd never seen characters like that, or a community on Broadway that felt so familiar to me like the one I grew up in.” In his wide-ranging At Home With interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the actor and singer-songwriter discusses growing up in the projects in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with his siblings and single mom, refusing to let others put him into a box, and aiming to express a complete thought on his second LP Love and Lies. Fresh off the album’s release, Ramos also curated an exclusive Apple Music playlist from the likes of TKA, H.E.R., Davido, and his partner Jasmine Cephas Jones, whose creative approach inspired him to reconsider his own. “She leads from her heart,” he says. “When you see someone doing that all the time as frequently as she does, it motivates you to do the same thing.”
