The most unabashedly melodic of ‘90s shoegaze groups, Ride has been a guiding light for Britpop stars, alt-rock titans, and avant-indie acts alike. Their tuneful discord proved foundational to a pre-fame Radiohead, while their stratospheric guitar sound prompted Smashing Pumpkins to dream big. Mogwai, however, keyed into the proto-doom-metal lurch of early Ride classic “Drive Blind” and churned it into the apocalyptic sludge of “Like Herod.”
