Jah Shaka Essentials

For the countless musicians, listeners, and dancers who flocked to Jah Shaka’s events over the years, his sound system was not just a source of riddim and wisdom. It was a teleportation device that could erase the distance between Jamaica and communities throughout the Caribbean diaspora, especially the South East London neighborhoods where the Clarendon Parish-born DJ, performer, and producer first gained a loyal following in the late '70s. Uniquely attuned to both the cavernous spaces of dub and the propulsive rhythms of dancehall, Shaka developed a musical vision that profoundly influenced post-punk groups like The Slits; the mavericks of jungle and grime; and the many acts he remixed and produced for his record label.
