Founded by Tunde Adebimpe and Dave Sitek in the early '00s, Brooklyn's TV on the Radio updated art-rock with electronics and soul, and they redefined indie in the process. Their 2003 debut was a desperate shot across the bow of a shell-shocked city, and they fused familiar comforts with hair-raising strangeness on 2006's ambitious Return to Cookie Mountain and 2008's Dear Science, balancing junkyard percussion with falsetto vocals and dance-punk gusto. Tragedy struck when bassist Gerard Smith died of lung cancer in 2011, but the band bounced back with 2014's Seeds.
