So committed are Ocean Grove to the notion of existing outside genre boundaries that they invented a new term for their sound: “odd world.” It’s perhaps the best description you could find for an act that began in Melbourne in 2010 as a nu-metal outfit—witness the Slipknot-like ferocity of “I Told You to Smile,” “Lights on Kind of Lover,” and “B.L.U.D.” off 2015’s Black Label EP—but has, over the years, traversed genres as broad as rock, grunge, hardcore, metalcore, hip-hop, pop, electro, and even Britpop (their collaboration with Dune Rats, “BORED”). To get an idea of Ocean Grove’s approach to their music, consider that they incorporated a lyrical nod to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” into their Like A Version cover of Sneaky Sound System’s “UFO,” seamlessly connecting the worlds of angst-fueled grunge and electronic synth-pop. Ocean Grove’s is an odd world indeed.
That they’ve managed to scratch their many and varied musical itches in the face of multiple lineup changes (electronic artist Running Touch was a founding guitarist before retiring from touring in 2014) speaks to a ferocious dedication to pushing the boundaries. Occasionally, that focus spills over into the band’s lyrics—amid tales of heartbreak (“CALI SUN”) and the mental highs and lows of being a human (“MY DISASTER”) is “BORED,” a song about shunning the norm, taking risks, and doing what you want to do. It could be an anthem for Ocean Grove’s career.
