Gang of Four’s punk-funk fusion wasn’t just a means to bring some groove to the pogo pit, but to interrogate how consumerism infects modern life. Their 1979 debut, Entertainment!, renders relationships in terms of business transactions (“At Home He’s a Tourist”) and faulty merchandise (“Damaged Goods”), and while their spiky sound had turned glossier by 1982’s “I Love a Man in a Uniform,” their political edge was sharp as ever. Outside of the classic quartet’s short-lived reunion at the height of the post-punk revival in the 2000s, the reconstituted versions of Gang of Four that emerged between the release of 1991’s Mall and 2011’s tough-as-nails Content featured King and Gill with a fluid cast of musicians.
