Named after a memorable scene from Pulp Fiction, Sydney duo Yolanda Be Cool topped charts in more than eight countries with 2010’s rubbery electro-swing earworm “We No Speak Americano.” A prime example of the pair’s rhythm-happy energy and consistent knack for breakout vocal samples, the track saw members Andrew Stanley and Matthew Handley team up with Aussie producer DCUP, who had remixed their debut single “Afro Nuts” and later joined them to rework Rodriguez’s wobbly psych-pop classic “Sugar Man.” Yolanda Be Cool’s 2012 debut album Ladies & Mentalmen was just as fruitful in its collaborations, yielding distinctive vocal turns from Indigenous Australian singer Gurrumul and fiery US soul icon Betty Wright.
