Hailing from regional Queensland, Mark Moffatt first made an impact with a record that would forever be associated with that state and its capital city of Brisbane: The Saints’ incendiary 1976 debut single “(I’m) Stranded.” But despite producing and mixing one of the earliest and most enduring salvos of punk, Moffatt worked widely across genres both at home and abroad, relocating to Nashville in 1996 and remaining there until his death in 2024. He ultimately produced no fewer than 15 eventual inductees into the ARIA Hall of Fame—including Yothu Yindi, whose 1991 protest song “Treaty” remains a modern milestone for First Nations rights in Australia. Through the 1980s he bolstered many classic New Wave acts (Mondo Rock, Tim Finn, Eurogliders) before continuing on to radio-friendly pop in the ’90s and country rock in the new millennium. He also played guitar in the blues-rock duo Kilo Band, a gritty teamup with singer John Swan, aka Swanee. No matter what style or era he was working in, the results speak for themselves.
