Hazlett Essentials
Playlist - 20 Songs
Introspection sits at the heart of Hazlett’s music. The solo creation of Stockholm-based Brisbane native Mitchell Hazlett Lewis, these indie folk songs are soft and confiding in nature. Combined with acoustic guitar picking and bare-bones arrangements, those intimate elements become genuinely moving as Lewis shares his hope and fears with the world. On 2022’s “Please Don’t Be,” he gently begs the song’s subject not to be in love with someone else, while the same year’s “Even If It’s Lonely” casts a dreamy spell that culminates in gauzy electronic washes. His self-therapeutic approach comes to the fore on 2024’s “Bones Shake,” which evokes early Bon Iver in both its double-tracked warble and its cabin-born writing process. Yet, as quiet as they start out, Hazlett songs often pick up steam partway through, for rousing effect. On 2025’s “blue jean,” a ghostly opening eventually makes way for a galloping rhythm and more layered instrumentation than usual. And when Lewis shares news of his current headspace with his mother on “doing my best,” it’s like we’re right there in the room with him.
