Kitty Wells is much more than one huge song, but they don’t get much bigger than her breakout hit: The 1952 release “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” marked a sea change in the early days of Music Row, showing for the very first time just how big of an impact a woman’s voice and perspective could have. Succinct, sharply sung, and more than a little sassy, the song has remained a touchstone for generations of artists and fans, as well as the slightly misleading signature of the long happily-married, religious, and ultimately domestic Wells. Her pioneering hit, as well as the dozens that came after it like “Making Believe” and “Release Me,” earned the Nashville native the title of the Queen of Country Music. Wells’ natural vibrato and easy power had a place on the country charts through the 1950s and ’60s; the trends came and went, and her traditional country sound and willingness to tell off no-good men remained constant. In doing that, she created a template for generations of women artists who followed while putting her own clear-eyed stamp on the genre as a whole.
