San Diego native Nathan Williams started out making the sort of home-brewed stoner-punk that suggested the only light in his life came from the TV set he passed out in front of each night. But on 2010's King of the Beach, he busted out of the basement to bask in the sun, embracing California's pop-punk tradition while letting his bratty vocals joyride atop crisp, jangly guitar riffs. The refinement process would continue with the Weezer-esque hooks of 2013's Afraid of Heights, while 2015's V saw Williams split the difference between his anthemic ambitions and his formative lo-fi freakery.
